about

I first became aware of the “Snow Channel” phenomenon through the world and works of Billings, Montana resident and world’s greatest author Chuck Tingle (chucktingle.com), who often talks about the shows and films he watches on Snow Channel on his social media pages, interviews, and podcasts.

In certain places around the world, like Billings, Montana, it’s possible to pick up a TV signal known in some circles as the “Snow Channel”, a 24-hour broadcast featuring a variety of content from game shows, popular films from the 1990s, news segments, and other, more bizarre content, usually hosted by Snow Channel Pete, the mysterious figure possibly behind the broadcast.

In late fall 2019, armed with a 12” television set, antenna, and handheld tape recorder, I set out for Billings to try and get a glimpse of the Snow Channel, and record what I could. Video proved impossible to capture.

I’m presenting here what’s left of the tapes, which amounts to less than an hour of audio. At the time of recording, they were perfectly intelligible, and I had full recordings of news segments, talk shows, commercials for new shows, and more.

For instance, when first recorded, the entire second side of one tape was a full recording of a documentary on Billings’ mythic “Frozen Lake”. Each time I listened to the tape, less of the audio was present. The voiceovers disappeared first, then the interview segments, then the archival footage, etc. Only a ghostly, repeating melody remains.

Once I realized what was happening, I quickly transferred as much as I could to my computer, but it was too late. It seems like my memory of my trip to Billings and what I saw on that little screen vanished along with most of the audio, but I still hope these tapes offer some sense of the feeling you get when Snow Channel Pete turns around in his chair and stares into the camera, straight through into your living room.

That much I won’t forget. Unfortunately.
